Running a business in the UAE

How mainland and free-zone formation in the UAE differ, and why licensing, banking and tax are separate questions from the formation filing.

Company formation in the UAE is available on the mainland and in a number of free zones. That choice affects licensing, visas, office requirements and which activities you may carry on. It is the first structural decision, not the last.

A formation agent can file documents. It cannot tell you whether the structure is appropriate for tax, or whether a bank will open an account. Banking, hiring and the place the company is actually managed remain separate questions.

What to weigh

Questions to confirm

  • Does the activity belong on the mainland or in a particular free zone?
  • Which visas and office requirements come with that choice?
  • Which bank will consider the company, and on what documents?
  • Where will management actually sit, and what does that mean for tax at home and in the UAE?

Common questions

Is a free-zone company the same as a mainland company?

No. Licensing, the activities you may carry on, office rules and visas differ. The right one depends on what the business does and where it sells.

Does formation include a bank account?

No. Banks assess the company separately. A formation certificate is not an account.

Can I hire in the UAE through an Employer of Record instead of a company?

Sometimes that model is used for a person in a country where you do not have an entity. It is not the same as forming a UAE company, and the provider has to support the specific hire. Confirm the country and the role.
