Running a business in Cyprus

What is straightforward about forming a Cyprus company, and what still has to be confirmed on banking, staffing and where the company is managed.

Forming a company in Cyprus is a defined process. Banking it, staffing it and showing where it is managed are the harder parts. Limassol is the main international business centre, which does not mean every bank or every activity is welcome.

A company managed from Cyprus may create a tax connection there even if it was formed somewhere else. Take advice before you move the decision-making. Employer-of-record arrangements are sometimes used when a person works in another country for a short or uncertain period. They are not a substitute for local advice.

What to weigh

Questions to confirm

  • Where will directors meet and where will decisions be taken?
  • Which bank will consider this activity and these payment countries?
  • Who will be employed, and in which country?
  • Does the personal residence route match the story told about management?

Common questions

Does forming a Cyprus company decide where it is taxed?

No. Where it is managed, and where you live, can matter as much as the place of incorporation. Ask a qualified adviser before you move decision-making.

Will a bank open an account because the company exists?

Not by itself. Banks in Cyprus look at source of funds, the activity and the countries involved. Some profiles are declined.

When is an Employer of Record relevant?

When a person works in a country where the company does not itself employ them. It is a different commitment from a local contract, and the provider’s country list has to include that hire.
