Moving to and managing money in Cyprus

A Mediterranean base for residence, business and banking conversations.

Cyprus is used both as a place to live and as a place to hold a company or a regional role. The island has a substantial professional services sector. As with any small international centre, banking appetite and residence routes change, and they depend on your profile.

Residency

Temporary and permanent residence routes exist, some of them linked to income or investment. The labels are easy to confuse. Read the qualifying conditions, not the marketing name.

Tax residence has its own tests, including day counts and, in some cases, other ties. Keep a diary.

Banking

Cypriot and international banks on the island apply close checks on source of funds and the nature of a business. Straightforward employment income is a different file from complex corporate money.

Ask early whether the bank will support your nationality, your sector and the countries you pay.

Taxes

Cyprus has its own residence tests and a network of treaties. Employment income, pensions, dividends and gains are not all treated alike.

A company managed from Cyprus may be taxable there even if it was formed somewhere else. Take advice before you move the decision-making.

Property

Title, planning and developer contracts need local legal review. Overseas buyers should be clear whether the property has clean title before paying more than a reservation.

If you are buying with a mortgage from abroad, currency risk sits with you unless the loan matches your income.

Investments

Investment access is driven by where you are resident and which provider will accept you. A Cyprus address does not automatically open every European platform.

Document the value of portfolios when your residence changes.

Insurance

Health cover may be required for some residence routes and is sensible even when it is not. Check whether a policy covers care in Cyprus and emergency treatment elsewhere.

Home insurance should name the Cypriot property and the use you will make of it.

Business

Forming a Cyprus company is a defined process. Banking it, staffing it and showing where it is managed are the harder parts.

Employer-of-record services are sometimes used when a person works in another country for a short or uncertain period. They are not a substitute for local advice.

Moving money

The euro removes one conversion if your other assets are already in euros. Transfers from sterling, dollars or dirhams should be priced properly.

Banks will ask why money is arriving. A short, documented explanation saves time.
