Moving to and managing money in the UAE
Banking, residency, property and business for people building a life in the Emirates.
The UAE is a frequent base for people who work internationally, hold assets in more than one currency, or run a business that needs a Gulf presence. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have deep professional communities. Rules on residence, tax and property are set locally and they change, so treat this page as orientation.
Residency
Several residence pathways exist, often linked to employment, business, property or longer-term programmes. Eligibility, fees and the right to work are not interchangeable across those routes.
Confirm the current criteria with the relevant authority or a regulated adviser before you rely on a visa category you have read about.
Banking
International and local banks in the UAE commonly ask for passport, visa or entry evidence, proof of address, and a clear explanation of source of funds. Requirements differ for residents and non-residents.
A multi-currency balance can be useful if you are paid in one currency and spend in another. It does not remove questions about tax residency at home.
Taxes
The UAE tax position depends on the type of income, whether you are resident, and whether a business has a taxable presence. Personal and corporate rules are distinct and have both evolved in recent years.
Do not assume a headline you have seen still describes your situation. A qualified adviser should look at both the UAE and the country you are leaving.
Property
Freehold ownership is available in designated areas. Purchases usually involve a developer or seller, a registered broker where one is used, and official registration.
Service charges, payment plans and what the contract actually conveys are more important than the view from the brochure.
Investments
People in the UAE may hold investments with local institutions, international platforms or providers in another country. Access depends on residency, nationality and the provider’s own rules.
Currency, reporting and what happens if you leave the UAE should be part of the first conversation, not an afterthought.
Insurance
Employers often provide health cover, but dependants, pre-existing conditions and care outside the UAE may sit outside that policy. Read the territorial limits.
Life and income cover arranged in another country may not respond in the same way once you are resident in the Emirates.
Business
Company formation is available on the mainland and in a number of free zones. The choice affects licensing, visas, office requirements and which activities you may carry on.
A formation agent can file documents. It cannot tell you whether the structure is appropriate for tax or banking. Those are separate questions.
Moving money
Salaries, property deposits, business invoices and investment subscriptions all move differently. Larger transfers attract questions about source of funds from both the sending and receiving bank.
Price the exchange rate and the fee together, and allow time if a completion date is fixed.
