Pensions across borders

Understand what can change around contributions, access, transfers, retirement income and beneficiaries when you move country.

Pension rules are national. A transfer that looks simple can still need scheme-specific advice.

A calm shoreline at sunrise

Pensions deserve separate attention because they are not simply investment accounts. Access, contributions, employer benefits, guarantees, tax treatment and transfer rights may all be governed by specific scheme rules and legislation.

For internationally mobile individuals, the key questions are often practical before they are investment-related: can contributions continue, can the provider still service you after a move, how might withdrawals be treated where you live, and what protections could be lost if you transfer?

Pension decisions can also be difficult to reverse. That makes timing, documentation and professional advice particularly important.

Explore pensions

The retirement picture

A pension can stay in one country while the person who depends on it spends decades living somewhere else.

That separation can affect contributions, servicing, access, tax reporting, currency exposure and estate planning. The account may look unchanged, but the surrounding rules may not be.

The basics

Why pensions need to be treated differently from ordinary investments

The questions tend to arrive in a sequence. None of the stages below is a date, and none of them is the same in every scheme.

  1. Contributions

While you are working, often with an employer involved.

  2. A move

Residence, payroll and servicing can change before retirement.

  3. Access

When scheme rules allow benefits to be taken.

  4. Income

How money is paid, in which currency, and to whom later.

  • Scheme rules

Pensions operate under their own rules on contributions, transfers, benefits and access.

  • Employer benefits

Workplace pensions may include employer contributions or benefits that do not exist in a personal investment account.

  • Restricted access

Pension assets are generally intended for retirement and may not be freely accessible whenever you choose.

  • Tax treatment

Contributions, growth and withdrawals may each be treated differently depending on the country involved.

  • Transfer consequences

A transfer can affect fees, guarantees, protections and future benefits, and may be irreversible.

  • Beneficiary treatment

Pension death benefits may be handled separately from the rest of an estate.

Pension types

Not all pensions work the same way

Defined contribution

Contributions build a pot. The value depends on contributions, investment performance and charges. Retirement income depends on the options available at the time.

Ask where it is invested, who manages it, what withdrawal options exist and what fees apply.

Defined benefit

Benefits are usually based on scheme rules rather than simply the size of an investment pot. The scheme may include guarantees or inflation-linked features. A transfer can carry significant consequences.

Ask what is guaranteed, what survivor benefits exist, what would be lost on transfer, and whether regulated advice is required.

Personal or individual pension

  • Privately arranged retirement account.
  • Investment choice may be broader.
  • Servicing and contribution rules may differ after relocation.

Workplace pension

  • Linked to employment.
  • May include employer contributions.
  • Leaving employment or moving country can change what happens next.

Terminology varies by jurisdiction. Always check the actual scheme rules rather than relying on the label alone.

Funding

Can you keep contributing after you move?

Contribution eligibility may depend on residence. Tax relief may depend on local rules. Employer contributions may stop or change. Personal contributions may remain possible without the same treatment as before. The destination country may have its own rules, and payroll may matter as much as the pension contract.

The answers belong to the scheme and to a qualified adviser. They are not set out here by country.

Questions to take to the scheme

  1. Can I continue contributing?
  2. Can my employer continue contributing?
  3. Will contributions still receive tax relief?
  4. Are there residency conditions?
  5. Are contribution limits different after a move?
  6. Does the destination country recognise the pension?
  7. Should I consider a local pension as well?

Workplace benefits

Employer pensions can change when employment changes

Leaving an employer, moving payroll to another country, or going on secondment can change membership. A home-country benefit and a local benefit are often different schemes. Benefits may become deferred. Matching, vesting and the right to stay in the scheme are all questions for HR and the administrator, not assumptions you can carry from the last contract.

Things to confirm with HR or the scheme administrator

  • Does membership continue?
  • Does employer matching continue?
  • Are there vesting conditions?
  • Does relocation trigger scheme closure?
  • Can future contributions continue?
  • What happens after leaving employment?
  • Where are records kept?
  • Who should be contacted later?

Cross-border pensions

A pension may stay where it is even when you move

The pension can remain in the home country. The provider may or may not continue servicing you. New contributions may be limited. Online access may continue. Advice permissions may change. Retirement payments may be sent abroad. Tax reporting may change. The destination country may or may not recognise the arrangement in the way you expect.

Riverside houses and boats in warm afternoon light
  • Account servicing

The provider may or may not keep servicing you at a new address.

  • Contribution rights

New money may be limited even if the account stays open.

  • Tax treatment

The same pension can be treated differently where you become resident.

  • Withdrawal reporting

The country you live in may expect its own information when benefits are paid.

  • Adviser permissions

Someone who can advise you now may not be permitted to advise you after the move.

  • Currency

Income may be paid in a currency that is not the one you spend.

Tax and reporting

Pension tax treatment can change across jurisdictions

Pension contributions, investment growth and withdrawals may each be treated differently depending on where the pension is established and where you are resident when benefits are taken.

  1. Contributions

Relief, or the lack of it, depends on the scheme and on where you are resident when you pay in.

  2. Investment growth

Growth inside a pension may be treated differently from growth in an ordinary account, and that treatment can change with residence.

  3. Lump sums

A one-off payment can be taxed differently from regular income. Ask before assuming it is treated as it was at home.

  4. Regular withdrawals

Ongoing payments may be taxed where you live, where the pension is established, or with a claim under both. That is a question for a tax adviser.

  5. Death benefits

What is paid after death, and to whom, can sit under pension rules and under local inheritance rules at the same time.

Do not assume that favourable pension tax treatment in one country is automatically recognised elsewhere.

Cross-border pension taxation can be highly specific. Professional tax advice may be appropriate before contributions, transfers or withdrawals.

Access

When and how can benefits be taken?

Access follows scheme rules. Those rules may cover a retirement point, lump sums, periodic withdrawals, and contractual income such as an annuity. Early access may be restricted. The provider may apply its own limits. Local tax treatment is a separate question. This page does not state an age or a percentage.

  • When can benefits normally be accessed?
  • Are lump sums permitted?
  • Are partial withdrawals possible?
  • Can income be paid abroad?
  • In which currency?
  • Are withholding taxes applied?
  • Does residence change the process?

Retirement income

Turning a pension into income is a separate planning decision

Income planning looks at cash-flow needs, the order of withdrawals, how long the money may need to last, market risk, inflation, the currency you spend, how pension income sits alongside other assets, and how tax is coordinated. Those are planning questions. They are not a product choice made on this page.

Flexible withdrawals

Potential characteristics

  • Control over timing.
  • Ongoing investment exposure.
  • Income can vary.
  • Market risk remains.

Guaranteed or contractual income

Potential characteristics

  • More predictable income.
  • Less flexibility.
  • May depend on provider terms.
  • Inflation and survivor benefits matter.

Different pension systems use different terminology. The purpose here is to distinguish flexible income from contractual income, not to recommend either.

Currency

Your pension may be denominated in a different currency from your retirement

The pension currency, the currency you spend, and the currencies of property, healthcare and travel can all differ. Exchange rates move. Paying the income abroad can involve a transfer fee and an FX spread, and the frequency of payment changes how often that cost appears.

  • Pension income

    GBP

  • Investments

    GBP / USD

  • Property

    EUR

  • Daily spending

An illustration of how currencies can differ. It is not a recommended mix, and it is not a rate.

Currency risk can affect the real spending power of retirement income even when the pension itself performs as expected.

Transfers

A transfer is more than an administrative tidy-up

Moving a pension between providers, or consolidating several pensions, can change the investments, the transfer value, the guarantees, the charges, the currency, the tax treatment and whether an adviser must be involved. The destination country may treat the new arrangement differently. Some transfers cannot be reversed.

  1. What you hold

Scheme rules, guarantees, charges and how the pension is invested now.

  2. What would be given up

Guarantees, protections, employer benefits and any feature that does not travel.

  3. What the new arrangement costs

Ongoing charges, exit charges, currency and how the destination country may treat it.

  4. Whether advice is required

Ask the scheme and a qualified adviser before you decide. Some transfers cannot be undone.

Before transferring, ask

  • What benefits would I give up?
  • Are any guarantees being lost?
  • Are there exit charges?
  • What does the new arrangement cost?
  • Does the destination country recognise it?
  • Will tax treatment change?
  • Will investment options improve?
  • Will reporting improve?
  • Is professional advice required?
  • Can the transfer be reversed?

Never treat a pension transfer as a simple platform switch. The benefits being surrendered may be more important than the features of the new account.

Guaranteed benefits

Defined benefit pensions need particular care

A defined benefit pension may promise an income, sometimes with a link to inflation, and may include benefits for a spouse or dependants. The transfer value, the employer’s covenant and any scheme protections are part of understanding what you hold. Leaving the scheme can be irreversible.

Defined benefit pensions can contain valuable guarantees that are difficult or impossible to recreate elsewhere.

This page does not suggest transferring out of a defined benefit scheme. Ask which protections apply, and take regulated advice where the scheme or the law requires it.

Questions to ask

  • What income is promised?
  • Is it inflation-linked?
  • What survivor benefits apply?
  • What happens on early or late retirement?
  • What is the transfer value?
  • Which protections would be lost?
  • Is regulated advice required before a transfer?

Succession

Pension death benefits may sit outside ordinary estate planning

Schemes may use a beneficiary nomination, an expression of wishes, or the discretion of trustees. A spouse, dependants and children can be treated differently. A trust may interact with the pension. The rules can differ by jurisdiction, and an old nomination can remain on file after life has changed.

  1. 01

    The pension

Held under scheme rules, which may be separate from your other assets.

  2. 02

    A nomination

An expression of wishes or a beneficiary form. The provider may still have discretion.

  3. 03

    The will

Directs the estate. It does not automatically direct the pension.

  • Review beneficiaries
  • Update contact details
  • Confirm survivor benefits
  • Confirm nomination forms
  • Understand local tax treatment
  • Coordinate with wills and the estate plan

A will and a pension beneficiary nomination do not necessarily control the same assets.

Costs

Look at the full pension cost, not one headline fee

  • Platform or administration fee

The cost of running the pension account.

  • Investment fund charges

Charges inside the funds or other investments held.

  • Adviser fee

What you pay a person or firm for advice, separately from the scheme.

  • Transaction charges

Costs that arise when investments are bought or sold.

  • FX costs

A spread or fee when contributions, transfers or income change currency.

  • Transfer fees

Charges for moving the pension, if a transfer is even available.

  • Withdrawal fees

Charges that apply when benefits are paid.

  • Policy charges

Costs written into an insurance-style pension contract, where that is the structure.

  • Guarantee-related costs

A charge that can sit inside an arrangement which offers a contractual benefit.

Ask for the expected annual cost in both percentage and monetary terms, and separate one-off costs from ongoing costs.

Records

Good pension records become more valuable after a move

International moves often happen years before retirement. Good records reduce the chance of having to reconstruct the history later.

  • Scheme statements
  • Contribution history
  • Tax-relief records
  • Transfer paperwork
  • Cost information where it is relevant
  • Beneficiary forms
  • Employment records
  • Old provider details
  • Adviser reports
  • Pension commencement documents

Due diligence

Questions worth asking before you make a pension decision

01Can you continue to service me if I move abroad?

Ask before you move. Some providers keep the account open and others restrict servicing. The answer depends on the scheme and on the destination.

02Can I continue contributing?

Contribution rights can depend on residence, employment and the scheme rules. Ask the administrator. This page does not set out limits for any country.

03Can my employer continue contributing?

Employer payments can stop or change when payroll, employment or the country of work changes. Confirm it with HR and with the scheme.

04What investment options are available?

Ask what you can hold, who chooses the investments, and whether those options change if you become non-resident.

05What are the total charges?

Ask for administration, investment, advice, transaction, currency and withdrawal costs together. This page does not publish figures.

06What benefits or guarantees apply?

Ask which benefits are contractual and which depend on investment values. A label such as “defined benefit” is a prompt to read the rules, not a description of your entitlement.

07When can benefits be accessed?

Access depends on the scheme rules and on the law that governs them. Ask for the normal access point and for any early-access limits. This page does not state an age.

08What withdrawal options exist?

Ask whether lump sums, partial withdrawals, drawdown-style income or a contractual income are available, and on what conditions.

09Can income be paid overseas?

Ask whether the provider will pay to an account in another country, and what evidence of residence they need.

10In which currencies?

Ask which currencies can be used for contributions, investments and income. Holding a currency and being paid in it can be different.

11What happens if I move again?

A provider that can serve one destination may not serve the next. Ask what would be reviewed if residence changes a second time.

12Can I transfer the pension?

Ask whether a transfer is possible. Possibility is not a reason to transfer. The useful question is what would be surrendered.

13What would I lose by transferring?

Ask specifically about guarantees, survivor benefits, protections and any feature that exists only inside the current scheme.

14Are there transfer-out charges?

Ask for exit charges and for any cost that appears only if you leave. Get them separately from the ongoing cost of a new arrangement.

15What survivor benefits exist?

Ask what, if anything, is paid to a spouse, dependants or other nominees, and whether the scheme or a trustee has discretion.

16How are beneficiaries recorded?

Ask whether the scheme uses a nomination, an expression of wishes, or both, and when the form was last updated.

17What reports will I receive?

Ask for a sample: contributions, value or promised benefits, charges, and any projected income. Projections are illustrations, not outcomes.

18What tax documents are produced?

Ask which statements the provider issues and which country they are designed for. You may still need local advice on how to report them.

19Can an external adviser access the account?

Ask whether a qualified adviser can receive information or give instructions, and what authority the scheme requires.

20Which legal entity administers the pension?

Ask for the scheme administrator and the legal entity, not only the employer or brand name on the statement.

Watch for

Potential warning signs

  • Pressure to transfer quickly
  • Guarantees described vaguely
  • Benefits that would be lost are not explained
  • Total charges are unclear
  • Tax outcomes presented as certain
  • Destination-country rules assumed rather than checked
  • Beneficiary arrangements ignored
  • A transfer value presented without context
  • The provider cannot explain servicing after relocation
  • A recommendation that depends heavily on one product

A warning sign does not automatically make an arrangement unsuitable. It is a reason to ask more questions.

Common situations

When international pension planning becomes more complicated

Situations that raise harder questions. They are not recommendations.

  • Situation 01

    Executive moving abroad mid-career

What happens to the employer scheme, whether contributions continue, how tax residence interacts with the pension, and how access works later.

  • Situation 02

    Several old workplace pensions

Where the records are, whether consolidation would surrender a guarantee, and how charges compare. Tidiness is not itself a reason to move a pension.

  • Situation 03

A defined benefit pension and a relocation

The income that has been promised, how it might be taxed, survivor benefits, and the currency of that income. A transfer is a separate and serious decision.

  • Situation 04

    Retiring overseas

How withdrawals are paid, the currency you spend, healthcare costs and how the pension sits with the estate plan.

  • Situation 05

A founder with a pension and sale proceeds

How retirement assets sit alongside new cash, and how tax and income planning are coordinated. The pension and the sale are different decisions.

  • Situation 06

A family living in several countries

Who is nominated, how the estate plan interacts with the pension, and which residence and reporting rules apply.

Before relocation

What to review before changing country

  • Confirm the scheme can continue to serve you
  • Confirm contribution rights
  • Check employer contribution arrangements
  • Review the timing of tax residence with a qualified adviser
  • Gather pension statements
  • Confirm beneficiary nominations
  • Understand the withdrawal rules
  • Review guarantees
  • Understand transfer restrictions
  • Identify destination-country tax questions
  • Review currency needs
  • Keep historic employment and scheme records

Some pension decisions are much easier to understand before relocation than after it.

After relocation

What to review once your residence changes

  • Update your address
  • Update tax-residency information the scheme asks for
  • Confirm contribution status
  • Confirm you can still access the account
  • Review investment options
  • Confirm how income can be paid
  • Confirm the currency of payment
  • Review beneficiaries
  • Check reporting requirements where you now live
  • Revisit estate planning with the relevant advisers
  • Schedule a periodic review

Professional support

When specialist advice may be particularly important

  • A defined benefit transfer
  • Safeguarded or guaranteed benefits
  • A pension that touches more than one jurisdiction
  • A large transfer value
  • A pension held alongside trusts or companies
  • A pension considered alongside a business sale
  • A major withdrawal before or after relocation
  • Uncertainty about destination-country tax treatment
  • Inheritance or survivor-benefit complexity

Do nothing?

Sometimes the right first step is simply to understand what you already have

International moves often create pressure to reorganise everything at once. A pension that remains suitable, well-priced and serviceable may not need immediate change simply because you move country.

  • Confirm the scheme will still service you
  • Confirm the tax questions with a qualified adviser
  • Understand the benefits you already have
  • Avoid a transaction that is not needed
  • Keep the flexibility to decide later
