Private banking across borders

Understand relationship banking, liquidity, lending, custody, currency and international servicing before choosing a private-bank relationship.

A private bank is a service model. It is not a promise about tax or returns.

New York skyline in evening light

Private banking is primarily a relationship-led banking service for clients with more complex financial needs. It can bring together cash management, lending, investments, custody and day-to-day banking through a named relationship team.

The value is not simply access to a premium account. The real question is whether the bank can coordinate the parts of your financial life that need to work together — particularly when assets, income, businesses, property and family interests span more than one country.

For internationally mobile clients, private banking also raises practical questions around residency, booking location, regulatory permissions, multi-currency access, lending portability and whether the relationship can continue after a move.

The private banking model

Private banking is not just about where you keep cash. It is about how banking, lending, liquidity and investments are coordinated around the client.

The service can be valuable when financial decisions are interconnected — for example, when investment portfolios support lending, when a business sale creates a large cash position, or when property, family and residency span multiple jurisdictions.

The basics

What does private banking actually provide?

  • Relationship management

A named banker or relationship team acts as the main point of contact across banking, lending and other services.

  • Cash management

Current accounts, deposits, liquidity planning and day-to-day movement of funds across currencies and jurisdictions.

  • Lending

Credit facilities may include mortgages, investment-backed lending, short-term liquidity and bespoke borrowing, subject to the bank’s credit criteria.

  • Investment access

Some private banks provide investment management or connect clients with an affiliated wealth-management business.

  • Custody and administration

Private banks may custody investments, administer accounts and provide consolidated reporting.

  • Coordination

Complex clients may value having banking, credit and investment conversations handled within one institution or relationship team.

They often overlap

Some institutions offer both private banking and wealth management. Others separate them into different legal entities, teams or jurisdictions.

Relationship banking

What does a private banker actually do?

The role is coordination. A private banker typically sits between you and the specialists inside the bank, and sometimes between you and advisers outside it.

  1. 1

    You

The client, and sometimes a family or a founder.

  2. 2

    Relationship team

    The named point of contact.

  3. 3

    Specialists

Cash, credit, payments, investments — and your own external advisers.

A private banker may

  • Coordinate internal specialists
  • Arrange lending discussions
  • Help manage large cash balances
  • Coordinate account openings
  • Facilitate payments
  • Help with onboarding across jurisdictions
  • Connect clients with investment teams
  • Coordinate with external advisers
  • Provide continuity across major financial events

A private banker is not automatically a tax adviser, lawyer or independent investment adviser. Clarify which advice is being provided, by whom, and through which legal entity.

Liquidity

Large cash balances create different questions

Once cash is more than a current-account balance, the useful questions are about purpose. Liquidity needs, how much sits with one bank, which money is short-term and which can wait, cash set aside for tax, a property purchase, business obligations, future investment, an emergency reserve, and cash held in more than one currency.

  1. 01

    Operating cash

    Day-to-day spending and payments.

  2. 02

    Short-term reserves

Tax, property, business and known upcoming commitments.

  3. 03

    Strategic cash

Capital waiting for investment or deployment.

  4. 04

    Long-term capital

Assets not required for near-term spending.

Private banking can help organise liquidity, but concentration, deposit protection, currency and counterparty risk still need consideration.

Credit

Why lending is a major part of private banking

Clients sometimes borrow so they do not have to sell an investment, a business holding or a property at a moment that does not suit them. Facilities can include securities-backed lending, liquidity for a tax bill or a purchase, bridge finance, credit lines for a business owner, and other borrowing the bank is willing to consider.

The terms that matter are the collateral, how loan-to-value is set, what happens if values fall, whether the bank can ask for more security, how concentrated the collateral is, the interest cost, and how much discretion the lender keeps. Any facility is subject to credit approval.

Questions to understand before borrowing

  1. What assets are eligible as collateral?
  2. How is collateral valued?
  3. Can lending limits change?
  4. What happens if markets fall?
  5. Can the bank ask for more collateral?
  6. What interest rate structure applies?
  7. Are there arrangement fees?
  8. Can the facility be cancelled?
  9. Does moving country affect the facility?
  10. What happens if the portfolio is concentrated?

Borrowing against investments can magnify risk. A fall in asset values may reduce borrowing capacity or trigger a requirement for additional collateral.

Property

Private banking often becomes relevant when property crosses borders

The property might be a primary residence, a second home, a home abroad or an investment property. A cross-border mortgage can involve a currency mismatch, extra collateral, evidence of income, ownership through a company or other entity, and local lending rules. Any facility is subject to credit approval.

Domestic property

Usually easier for a bank that understands local income, property law and credit rules.

International property

May require coordination between jurisdictions, different legal entities, local advisers and currency considerations.

Investments

Where banking ends and investment management begins

Some private banks manage investments. Some use a separate wealth arm. Some will only execute your instructions. Some offer custody without advice. The range of investments may be open, restricted to the bank’s own products, or a mixture. Advice, where it is given, may be regulated separately from the banking relationship.

Ask where banking stops and the investment service starts, and which company is providing each.

Questions to ask

  • Is the investment service independent or restricted?
  • Which legal entity provides investment advice?
  • Is custody separate?
  • Are proprietary products used?
  • Are rebates or commissions received?
  • Can external advisers use the custody platform?
  • Can assets be transferred elsewhere?

Cross-border banking

Can the relationship follow you when you move?

Continuity depends on your current residence, where you expect to live next, nationality, tax residence, local regulation, the bank’s appetite, which products it offers in each place, whether credit can move, and whether anyone is still permitted to advise on investments. Ask the bank whether the relationship can continue.

A financial-district skyline at sunset

Before moving, ask

  • Can you continue to bank me?
  • Will my relationship manager remain the same?
  • Will my account move to another legal entity?
  • Will lending remain in place?
  • Can I continue investing?
  • Will any accounts become restricted?
  • Will reporting change?
  • Will I need a local account?
  • Will fees change?

Currency

Private banking often means managing more than one currency

Income, spending, investments, property and borrowing can each sit in a different currency. Conversion then has a timing, a spread and sometimes a transfer fee. A mismatch between the currency you earn or spend and the currency you borrow is a risk in its own right.

  • Income

    GBP

  • Property

    EUR

  • Investments

    USD / GBP

  • Spending

    AED

  • Borrowing

    EUR or GBP

An illustration of how currencies can differ. It is not a recommended mix, and it is not a rate.

The key question is not simply whether the bank offers multiple currencies. It is how efficiently money moves between them and whether borrowing, spending and investments create unintended currency risk.

Structure

Which legal entity actually serves you?

A bank brand is not the same thing as the legal entity on the contract. The booking location, a local branch and an entity booked elsewhere can be different companies. The contract, the jurisdiction, the regulator, and the companies that take deposits, hold custody, lend and provide investments may not line up under one name.

Bank brand

  • Cash

    The company that holds deposits.

  • Lending

    The company that provides credit.

  • Custody

    The company that holds investments.

  • Investment services

The company that advises or manages.

A global bank may operate through several legal entities. Your current account, investment account and credit facility may not all sit with the same company.

  • Which entity holds my cash?
  • Which entity provides lending?
  • Which entity provides investment services?
  • Which regulator oversees each?
  • Which country’s terms apply?
  • What changes if I relocate?

Costs and incentives

Understand how the bank earns money from the relationship

Private banks can be paid in more than one way. The list below is conceptual. It is not a fee schedule, and the amounts depend on the bank.

  • Account fees

A charge for the account or the relationship itself.

  • Lending margins

The difference between the bank’s funding cost and the rate you pay.

  • Deposit spreads

The gap between what the bank earns on cash and what it pays you.

  • Investment-management fees

Charges for advice or portfolio management, where that service is offered.

  • Custody fees

Charges for holding and administering investments.

  • FX spreads

A margin inside the rate when money is converted.

  • Transaction charges

Fees that arise when you pay, transfer or deal.

  • Product fees

Charges inside funds or other products you use.

  • Referral income

Payments the bank or an affiliate may receive for introducing a product.

  • Structured-product margins

A margin that can sit inside a structured product, where those products are offered.

Ask for the total economic cost of the relationship, not just the fee for one account.

  • What am I paying directly?
  • What margins are embedded?
  • Does the bank receive product payments?
  • Are FX spreads disclosed?
  • Is lending priced separately?
  • Are investment products proprietary?

Eligibility

Private banking is usually relationship-based, not product-based

A bank may look at investable assets, deposits, borrowing, income, a business relationship, an expected liquidity event, or the value of the relationship as a whole. Many private banks use internal eligibility criteria, but these can vary by country, service model and overall relationship. A published asset threshold is not always the whole picture.

Ask whether eligibility is based on cash deposits, investable assets, borrowing needs or the wider relationship.

This page does not publish minimum balances. Any figure you are given should come from the bank, for your circumstances.

Family

Private banking can extend beyond one individual

A relationship may include a spouse, adult children, family accounts, a family company, and conversations about succession, financial education for the next generation, powers of attorney and coordination with estate advisers.

For families with assets across several jurisdictions, clarity over account ownership and legal authority matters as much as convenience.

Entrepreneurs

Founders often have both business and personal banking needs

The personal and the company accounts can meet around a sale, a concentrated shareholding, business cash, personal liquidity, borrowing before an exit, money set aside for tax, a later investment plan, property and succession. The bank may see both sides. They are still different decisions.

  1. Business value
  2. Liquidity event
  3. Cash management
  4. Debt, property and tax reserves
  5. Investment strategy
  6. Estate and family planning

One way a transition can be thought about. It is not a sequence that is right in every case.

Choosing a bank

What should you evaluate beyond the brand name?

  1. 01

    Jurisdictional capability

Can the bank genuinely support the countries relevant to you?

  2. 02

    Relationship continuity

What happens if you move or your banker leaves?

  3. 03

    Lending capability

Does the credit offering match your actual needs?

  4. 04

    Custody model

Where are assets and cash legally held?

  5. 05

    Investment architecture

Open architecture, proprietary products, or a mixture?

  6. 06

    FX transparency

How clearly are currency costs explained?

  7. 07

    Service quality

Response times, execution, digital access and reporting.

  8. 08

    Coordination

Can the bank work with your lawyers, accountants and tax advisers?

Due diligence

Questions worth asking before you become a client

01Which legal entity will serve me?

Ask for the company named on the contract, not only the brand. Cash, lending and investments may sit with different companies in the same group.

02Which regulator supervises that entity?

Ask which regulator authorises the entity that will actually serve you, and in which country. A single brand can operate under more than one permission.

03Where will my cash be held?

Ask which company takes the deposit and where the account is booked. The brand on the statement is not always the deposit-taker.

04Where will investments be custodied?

Ask who the custodian is, how assets are registered, and whether custody sits with a different company from the one that holds cash.

05Can you continue to serve me if I move country?

Ask before you move. A bank may continue the relationship, restrict new money or products, or stop servicing clients in the destination. It depends on the bank and the jurisdiction.

06Will I need to transfer to another booking entity?

A move can mean the same brand asks you to contract with a different company. Ask whether that is likely, and what would have to be opened again.

07What happens to existing credit facilities if I relocate?

Lending may be reviewed, restricted or asked to be repaid if residence changes. Ask whether the facility can continue. Any answer is subject to the bank’s credit terms.

08What currencies can I hold?

Ask which currencies are available on the accounts you would use. Being able to hold a currency is not the same as spending, investing or borrowing in it.

09How are FX costs determined?

Ask whether conversion uses a reference rate plus a margin, a spread, or a separate fee, and at what point the conversion happens.

10What types of lending are available?

Ask which facilities exist for someone in your situation — for example mortgages, lending against investments, or short-term liquidity. Availability is subject to credit approval.

11What collateral does the bank accept?

Eligible assets vary. Ask which holdings, property or other assets can support a facility, and which cannot.

12How are lending limits reviewed?

Limits can change with collateral values, concentration and the bank’s own appetite. Ask how often a facility is reviewed and what can reduce it.

13What investment service do you provide?

Some banks manage portfolios, some advise, some only execute, and some provide custody without advice. Ask which of those you would actually receive.

14Is investment advice independent or restricted?

Ask whether advice can look across the wider market or is limited to the bank’s own range, and which legal entity gives it.

15Are proprietary products used?

Ask whether investments the bank puts forward are managed by the bank or an affiliate, and how that is disclosed.

16What are the total fees and spreads?

Ask for account fees, custody, investment charges, FX spreads and transaction charges together. This page does not publish those figures.

17Who receives commissions or referral income?

Ask whether the bank, an affiliate or an introducer is paid when you use a product, and by whom.

18What reporting will I receive?

Ask to see a sample that covers cash, investments, lending, income and currency, and whether those are shown together.

19Can my external advisers access information?

Ask whether a lawyer, accountant or independent adviser can receive statements or a limited view, and what authority is required.

20What happens if my relationship manager leaves?

Ask who else knows the relationship, and whether coverage sits with a team or only with one person.

21What happens if I no longer meet eligibility criteria?

Ask what changes if deposits, assets or borrowing fall below the bank’s internal criteria. The relationship may not continue on the same terms.

22Can assets and cash be transferred elsewhere easily?

Ask about notice, exit charges, whether holdings can move without being sold, and whether any product can only be held at that bank.

23Can family members be included in the relationship?

Ask which family members can be added, what authority is required, and whether each person is a client of the same legal entity.

24How is the relationship handled if I become resident in another jurisdiction?

Ask which permissions, products and reporting change, and whether a different entity would take over the relationship.

Watch for

Potential warning signs

  • Unclear legal entity
  • Opaque FX pricing
  • Pressure to use proprietary products
  • Unclear custody arrangements
  • Lending terms that are not well explained
  • A relationship that depends entirely on one individual banker
  • The bank cannot explain what happens after relocation
  • Fees explained only product by product
  • Promises of tax advantages without specialist advice
  • Unclear account portability

A warning sign does not automatically make a bank unsuitable. It is a reason to investigate further.

Common situations

When private banking becomes particularly relevant

These are situations in which the questions get harder. They are not recommendations.

  • Scenario 01

    Founder after a business sale

A large cash balance, diversification, tax reserves, lending and the move from a business holding into a broader set of assets.

  • Scenario 02

    International property buyer

Multi-currency banking, mortgage finance, the timing of a deposit and payments that cross borders.

  • Scenario 03

    Executive moving abroad

Whether accounts continue, how compensation and equity awards are received, and whether investment servicing still fits the new residence.

  • Scenario 04

    Family across several countries

Family accounts, estate planning, succession and reporting when people and assets are not in the same place.

  • Scenario 05

    Investor with concentrated assets

Liquidity needs, lending against those assets, diversification and the risk of relying on one holding.

  • Scenario 06

    International retiree

Income flows, pension payments, continued banking access, currency and how the family would deal with the accounts later.

Relocation

What to review before changing residence

  • Confirm the private-bank relationship can continue
  • Confirm which account entity you are contracting with
  • Confirm whether lending continues
  • Check mortgage arrangements
  • Confirm investment permissions
  • Review the currencies you hold in cash
  • Update tax-residency information the bank asks for
  • Understand whether reporting changes
  • Check access to cards and payments
  • Review wills and powers of attorney with the relevant lawyers
  • Understand whether fees change
  • Confirm relationship-manager coverage after the move

Right fit

Private banking is not automatically the right solution

A simpler arrangement may be enough when:

  • Banking needs are straightforward
  • There is no need for lending
  • Investing is self-directed
  • Circumstances are largely domestic
  • Little coordination across people or countries is required
  • A transparent digital bank already does the job

The value of private banking depends on complexity, service needs and whether the relationship solves problems that simpler providers do not.

Professional support

When other advisers may need to be involved

  • Cross-border tax
  • Trusts
  • Estate planning
  • Company structures
  • Complex lending
  • International property
  • A business sale
  • Pension planning
  • Regulatory questions about who may advise you
  • Succession planning
