Moving to and managing money in Portugal
Residency, banking and property for people considering Portugal.
Portugal attracts people relocating from the UK and elsewhere in Europe, often for climate, a property purchase, or a period of remote work. Incentive regimes and immigration routes are revised from time to time. Check the current version rather than a summary you saved last year.
Residency
Residence can be based on employment, self-employment, family, study or other published routes. Each has its own evidence and timeline.
Immigration status and tax residence are assessed separately. A visa does not, by itself, answer the tax question.
Banking
Local banks generally expect identification, a Portuguese tax number and an address. Non-resident accounts are possible with some institutions and come with extra checks.
If you will receive a foreign salary or pension, ask how the account handles that currency and those payers.
Taxes
Residents are generally taxed on worldwide income, with reliefs and special regimes that have specific conditions and end dates. Non-residents are taxed on Portuguese-source income.
Treat any widely quoted regime as something to verify against the year you actually become resident.
Property
Urban and rural purchases both need legal checks: title, debts, planning and, where relevant, short-let rules. Those rules are local and have tightened in some cities.
Budget for taxes and fees on top of the price, and do not exchange completion funds until your lawyer is content.
Investments
Moving to Portugal can change the tax treatment of funds, shares and property you already own. Some accounts remain open; the tax outcome may still change.
Keep provider statements that show value on the date your residence changes. They are useful later.
Insurance
Access to the public health system depends on your contributions and status. Private cover is widely used during the early months and by people whose visas expect it.
If you own a property you do not yet live in, make sure the insurance matches that use.
Business
Freelancers and companies both have registration steps. Invoicing a foreign client from Portugal does not automatically keep the activity outside Portuguese tax.
Banking for a new company can take longer than the formation itself.
Moving money
Euro transfers inside Europe are often simpler than transfers from further afield, but a poor exchange rate still matters if your savings are in another currency.
For a house purchase, agree who holds the funds and what evidence the receiving bank will want.
