Moving to and managing money in Malta

Residence, banking and business orientation for a small EU state.

Malta is a European Union member with an English-speaking professional environment and an active residence and business community. Its size is an advantage when you want a compact centre, and a constraint when a bank or adviser has a narrow appetite. Verify every route against current official guidance.

Residency

Ordinary residence, employment and specific residence programmes are different paths. Programme names are updated. Always read the current rules and the tax consequences together.

A residence card answers an immigration question. It does not, on its own, describe how your worldwide income will be taxed.

Banking

Maltese banks are used to international clients and equally used to detailed due diligence. Straightforward cases still need a clear story and documents.

If you need to pay suppliers in several currencies, ask about that at account opening rather than after the first invoice.

Taxes

Malta’s tax system includes residence and domicile concepts that do not map neatly onto every other country. Remittance and worldwide bases can both appear, depending on status.

This is an area to take personal advice on. Published summaries age quickly.

Property

Some purchases by non-residents are subject to permit or minimum-value rules. Confirm whether those apply to the property you want before you pay a deposit you cannot recover.

Apartments in Valletta and Sliema and houses elsewhere are different markets, with different running costs.

Investments

Holding EU or international investments while resident in Malta is common. The tax and reporting outcome depends on your personal status and the type of income.

Ask each provider whether a Malta address is acceptable for the specific account you want to keep or open.

Insurance

Health cover is often part of a residence application and should be compared on exclusions, not only on the annual premium.

Travel policies are a poor substitute for full-time international health insurance if you have actually moved.

Business

Malta is used for holding, trading and regulated activities. Regulated sectors need a licence. An ordinary trading company does not become regulated merely by being formed in Malta.

Substance — people, decisions and records on the island — matters if you want the structure to be respected elsewhere.

Moving money

Euro payments inside Europe are usually straightforward. The questions start when money arrives from a sale of property, a company distribution or a third country.

Keep contracts and bank statements that explain the source. You will be asked.
